One needs a variety of skills to be a farmer. Well, at the very least, it makes life a lot easier to be able to do what needs to be done when it needs to be done.
This winter has been brutally cold here in northern Vermont and we have a number of older (mid-teens) alpacas. As they age, most alpacas grow a shorter staple (length of fiber), so it’s not as easy for them to stay warm on the coldest days. We always have a few alpacas coats on hand, but sometimes we don’t have the right size for a particular alpaca. Need a new coat today? No problem – grab a wool blanket, a pair of scissors and a sewing machine.
