We’re in the midst of birthing season here at Snowshoe Farm. Now we get to see the results of the pairings we selected last year and that is one of the most rewarding parts of breeding. We have a few first time moms this year and there’s always a concern about that. To be honest, we have never had a problem with a new mother. We’ve had a few crias through the years who were slow to catch on to nursing, but the moms have been rock solid.
We currently have three crias on the ground and are expecting two more. Three of the group will be mothers for the first time and two have already passed that test with flying colors. So far, the babies are looking great. We would not hesitate to repeat these breedings.
This image shows two of our moms, Skye Snow and Spirit Wind’s Minuette hanging out in the barn with their crias. Skye was the first to give birth this year and this is her first cria. The baby, a female, was over 20 lbs at birth and Skye is a wonderful mother. Minuette is an experienced mom and her baby, a male who was over 18 lbs – still pretty good sized, is a wild little man. We couldn’t be more pleased with how healthy and vigorous these babies are and their fleeces are looking very nice. They will be shorn soon!
