Finally! We’ve been waiting for weeks for the first cria of the season to arrive. The first female due was Rosita, who usually goes at least week or two early. Not this year. She didn’t even go first; her daughter, Glinda, had the first cria of the year. Oddly enough, both babies were born late in the day and with no problems. Alpaca crias are usually born in the morning, sometimes early afternoon, but rarely late in the day. Most of us who raise alpacas see a red flag when a female starts to go into labor late in the day. Over the last 14 years we’ve had just a handful of late days births.
Here are our two beautiful new babies. No names yet – gotta think on that for a bit. The brown cria is a female out of Glinda and the gray is a male out of Rosita. While we generally hope to see female crias and we are very pleased with Glinda’s baby, we’re excited about this little gray male. He’s very handsome and a nice sturdy and active cria. His fiber looks promising. We’ll see….
