We had two crias born this morning! The first was to Hannah’s Julie. That birth, as usual, was a production. The head and one leg presented along with the placenta. Not good. I lubed up and went in to try to reposition with other leg with no luck. I put a call in to the vet early on, so he was on his way and arrived within 40 minutes or so. He corrected the dystocia and delivered the cria in about a minute. A girl – all 26.5 lbs of her! And just fine even after the difficult delivery. She was up and trying to nurse in no time at all!
Within about 30 minutes of that birth, we had another nose poking out. This female, Ella, is owned by Nu Leafe Alpacas and is boarded at our farm. She gave birth easily and quickly – just the way we like it. Her male cria weighed a more normal 14.5 lbs and is doing great and Ella, a first time mom, is wonderful.
