Keeping Busy During the Pandemic
While COVID-19 still rages, we’re doing our best to stay on the farm and have very little contact with other people except for trips to the Post Office and a few stores. And that really isn’t much different than our normal life. Running a farm means working 7 days a week and not having a lot of time or need to leave home. But, like most people, we do have a little more time on our hands than usual, especially this time of year when winter means no gardening or mowing or any of the other chores that keep us busy during the warmer months.
So this winter, one of my goals is to clean up old files and better organize my office. We’ve been in the alpaca business for 22 years and we have the paperwork to prove it. But not for much longer. I make myself go through at least one file a day even if I’m busy. And the paperwork is quickly disappearing.
During the years, we kept files on each alpaca that lived on our farm, including health records, breeding records and, of course, registration certificates. After going through a lot of old files, I amassed a pile of old ARI certificates for alpacas that either have died or been sold without transferring the registration. In the end, it’s just more paperwork and will be shredded along with the rest of the miscellaneous papers. But these certificates bring back memories of some much-loved alpacas that we have been lucky to have in our life.
