Yesterday we welcomed (finally!) the year’s first cria. At 358 days gestation, this not-so-little girl weighed in at 20.2 lbs. There was a bit of difficulty with the birth – the cria’s elbow was back and trying to come out at the same time as the shoulders and wouldn’t fit. But after a lot of lube and some pushing things around, she slid right out. Thank goodness I had visitors willing and eager to help out as I was alone on the farm when it happened. And Casie – the dam – was great through the whole ordeal. And she’s a great mother! The cria – a female that has yet to be named – is doing just fine. This cria is the first for our gray male, Nibblewise of Elfenwood.
