I’ve been watching this big poplar tree for the last few days since we’ve had some heavy rains and wind. Had it always been leaning this much and I’d not noticed? Guess not. This morning the tree was down on the perimeter fence around our male alpacas’ pasture.
But no harm done. The tree missed the corner posts and just landed on the wire. We use a 7 strand high tensile fence for our perimeter. One of the advantages of this type of fence is that a tree can land on the wire and, once the tree is removed, the wire will pretty much just spring back into place. Looks like we’ll have to move, and maybe even replace, a few insulators, but that’s no big deal.
There are advantages and disadvantages to all types of fencing and all fences can be dangerous to the livestock they’re meant to protect. An owner has to weigh the pros and cons and choose the fence that best fits their containment needs, their layout and topography and their budget.
