There’s always a project in the works on the farm. Our 2014 project involved partially closing in the ends of our barn overhangs to help cut down on wind and wind-driven precipitation. While our alpacas make great use of the overhang areas, including on most winter days, there are times when no one wants to be out there due to a cold wind or driving rain. And in winter, we often end up with snow piles on the ends.
Our “girls” barn has two long overhangs, 12′ x 48′. And each end has a gate to provide access to the paddocks. Our project involved adding a wall to close in about 8′ of each end of the overhangs, leaving the gates as is.
The snow and wind of the last few days has shown us what a great idea it was to do this! It was a small project, really, but it gives us more usable barn space during a time of year when the alpacas spend much of their time in the barn.
